Microdegrees for Job Focus

Microdegrees are collections of courses that cover the competencies required for a specific job classification.  As such they have a close relationship to an area of study associated with a typical major degree.  However, microdegrees go further by identifying competencies identified by hiring managers that go beyond the major courses.  In this way, microdegrees include the "soft skills" and other 21st Century Skills that are needed to be considered a viable candidate for a job within that job classification.

Microdegrees can be used by people who may already have a degree, but lack the "extra" knowledge that is essential for job success.  They are also useful for people considering a job change and wish to see how well their experience already aligns with what is needed to be considered for a target position.

Note that all jobs are different and microdegrees are an attempt to identify commonality across many open positions advertising within the job classification group.  A microdegree will not fully qualify you for any specific job, but will get you headed in the right direction for possible consideration.  The rest will be up to you to learn more about the specific job requirements and where that position fits within the organization.

Much work is needed to identify the common requirements for different job classifications, but we believe this will be the future of higher education and faculty will be shifting focus to this effort once the basic curricular structure is established.
